The image is not by Albert Namatjira, who is the best known Australian Aboriginal artist. His work was European-influenced rather than depicting traditional techniques of aboriginal art.

Amongst famous Aboriginal women, are Kathy Freeman who won gold at Sydney's 2000 Olympic Games (women's 400 meter), and Evonne Goolagong who was one of Australia's most successful tennis players, winning the Australian Open three times, the French Open once and Wimbledon twice. Rosalie Kunoth Monks played the title role in Australia’s first feature-length colour film "Jedda" (1955) before championing aboriginal rights.

Australian Aboriginal People prefer to be referred to by the term "aboriginal" rather than "aborigine". The first European settlers in Australia called aboriginal peoples "aborigine", which merely means "indigenous" and does not differentiate Australian aboriginals from the indigenous peoples of other nations.

Genetic and archeological evidence indicates that humans began to migrate into Australia at least 50,000 years ago (estimates range from 60,000 to 40,000 years ago). Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, named for Lake Mungo, are the earliest known skeletal remains of Australia's indigenous inhabitants.

Wodaabe Yaake

Apparently maidens of the Wodaabe Yaake tribe are attracted to young men who look like these resplendent fellows. . . . roll-over image links for previews or follow the theme trails by clicking on each image to proceed to the next . . .

Wodaabe maidens are courted by these handsome, resplendent, eye-rolling natives who have donned their finery for a Yaake (dance). At 'Cure Salée' festival gatherings in Nigeria, the Wodaabe (Bororo) are a small minority belonging to the wider group of the Fulani. The Wodaabe have preserved their ancient nomadic tradition.

The 'Cure Salée', meaning Salt Cure, festival attracts Niger's other nomadic groups, the Tuaregs, and Arabs. (Click here for a high resolution image of a Tuareg tribesman riding a camel.)

The dijiridu (dijeridu, didgeridoo) is an aerophone or natural wooden trumpet, and its pulsing, low frequency sound has resulted in its also being called the "drone pipe." Aboriginals of Australia's North eastern Arnhem Land call the dijiridu the "yirdaki" (yidaki), whereas those of Western Arnhem land call it the "mago".

Like the oboe, the didgeridoo is played with continual vibration of the lips while using a special breathing technique called "circular breathing". In this four-stage technique, the player maintains the note by inhaling through the nose while using the cheeks as bellows.

Dijiridus are one to two meters in length, and the longer the instrument, the deeper the tone. Aboriginals accompany dijiridu music with rhythmic clicking of music sticks.
